New Zealand nationals getting married in Thailand. Whenever foreigners decide to get married in Thailand, the marriage registration process usually starts at your embassy in Bangkok. There are two forms of marriage registration: Foreigner to Thai or Foreigner to Foreigner. Thai marriage registration is simple and straightforward, however, the paperwork required might be too complicated for some. Once the marriage is registered in Thailand, all the documents have to be translated into Thai language and legalized so it will be recognized overseas. Ensure that you have your letter of affirmation or freedom to marry in Thailand.

New Zealand Nationals Getting MarriedFor every individual getting married in Thailand who is a foreign national, the Thai Registrar would be requiring a completed Statutory Declaration translated into Thai language. Religious ceremonies are not required for legal marriage procedure in Thailand.

Procedures to getting married in Thailand for New Zealand nationals:

  • Appointment with the embassy in a form of email request
  • Statutory Declaration

This document can be obtained personally at the New Zealand Embassy in Bangkok, you should bring the following: New Zealand Passport, Document fee, Death or Divorce Certificate and original NZ passport by your embassy.

  • Translation of documents

Have all your documents translated into Thai language – which can be done thru translation services.

  • Legalize all documents

After having all documents translated, they must be legalized by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This process is the act of authenticating the NZ Embassy official’s signature on the Statutory Declaration held on their records. There is an expected fee for this process which takes up to a couple of days to finish. However, the New Zealand Embassy cannot confirm on how long the whole process may take as it will depend if there will be any editions with the translated documents.

For marriage registration, you can visit any Local District Office or Thai registration office within the country.
