Islamic marriages do happen in Thailand and there are a lot of converts to Islam living in Thailand. Most simply want an Islamic marriage without registering under Thai Law, but acquiring a visa on this type of traditional marriage is hopeless. Take note that this Islamic marriage is only recognized by Muslim countries.
Islamic Marriage in Thailand
There are different requirements needed depending on nationality. Once you have all the documents required, you can now proceed to arranging an Islamic wedding in Thailand. If your spouse is a non-Muslim, then you need to make arrangements with the Islamic Centre in Bangkok for the conversion of your partner to Islam. A conversion ceremony can be arranged, this will be conducted at the Islamic Center without any issues before the Islamic marriage done. The entire process will take not more than an hour, however, everything should be made accordingly and on a tight schedule as the Islamic Centre is quite a distance to Bangkok and an appointment must be made ahead as to Imam’s availability.
After conversion and marriage performed, all your documents need to be translated and certified. Then you will take all the documents to the Thai Foreign Affairs office to be verified and legalized.
Many have assumed that the Islamic marriage in Thailand is enough to prove that both are legally married. This is common mistake amongst many. Islamic or Muslim marriage in Thailand is only a religious ceremony performed under Islamic law, thus, it is only acknowledged by the Muslim society and by Muslim countries.
Islamic marriage is different from Thai legal marriage. As one is only a religious marriage under Muslim law and the other is a legal marriage which is a legal binding agreement.
