Phuket Island is moving to the use of renewable energy on both the Racha and Lone islands. They are also moving towards promoting energy conservation and renewable energy investment in the region. In order to reduce the use of fossil fuel, Phuket has encouraged the Esoc fund to invest in Racha island, as well as requesting 18 million baht from the Ministry of Energy or Swedish fund in order to support the renewable system in Racha island.

Renewable Energy in Thailand

Renewable Energy in ThailandThere are many hotels and resorts on Racha island as well as numerous bungalows which need the oil to generate the electricity and it currently costs around 100,000 baht per month. With the increase in oil prices it is important to find an alternative energy source to help reduce the cost. In addition to this, Phuket is also the appropriate place to use renewable energy since the Racha island is located among the seawind which always blows, moreover there are a lot of a solar energy and bio gas energy options. When the project starts they are expecting to reduce the cost of electricity by around 30-40% per year.

Lone island is located in the extraterritorial of the Provincial Electricity Authority which is far from Phuket city around 5 kilometers. The island has 1 school as well as a public health center. There are about 100 households on the island which are employed mainly in fishing and rubber plantation farming. The island also has its own water resource. Nowadays, the electricity use on the island is still generated from a diesel engine and it costs around 2,000 baht per month which people can use only 2-3 hours per day.

In the initial survey, Lone island can supply power voltage 100-watt level by running a combination of wind power, solar power and diesel engines.

This project is still in budget request process, which strongly supported by the Ministry of Energy and Swedish Fund. The process is now under implementation.
