Good and Bad – Thailand Tourism
Thailand is a special country which attracts in an average range of over 30 million tourists annually. Tourism makes up Thailand’s Gross Domestic Product and supports majority of the jobs in the Kingdom. It is quite clear that tourism has a big impact in Thailand. Tourism both helped and prevented Thailand after the tsunami struck the Kingdom in 2004.
Good and Bad – Thailand Tourism
With a high demand for jobs and funds, a lot of luxury hotels were able to resume operations within months. However, some groups such as migrant workers may have found it a struggle to receive help from the government. The calamity also started the marginalization of those in the lower-class as many were stopped from returning to their homes in tourist areas such as the beach.
Social Tourism is also one of Thailand’s pride, there is no exact figure on the number of tourists coming to Thailand, but it has created a community where foreigners are most hailed in the Kingdom. Many locals have accepted tourists as part of the culture of being warm and welcoming.
Most frequently tourists also travel to Thailand to take advantage of the cost-efficient medical treatments. According to an insurance company, Thailand was third in the whole world as the most sought destination for health tourism in 2016. Many medical tourists can save as much as half of what they would usually spend in the United States for a certain treatment. And the most exciting part is the recovery by the beach or in a nice resort, making Thailand the medical hub of Southeast Asia. (See: Thai Visa)
Together with the increase of tourism in Thailand has a bit of disadvantage in a way with the control and increase of trash. A very common example for this problem is waste left over after a beach party. Every Full Moon beach party in some beach areas particularly in Koh Phangan, there is an estimated 12 tons of debris left behind daily which most likely goes into the oceans or in landfills. Many environmental groups are trying to point this problem out which hopefully creates environment-friendly programs for biodegradable materials.
Tourism in Thailand has drawn great opportunities for employment, a great improvement in the medical field as well as culture awareness. There are some contests in regard with so-called prostitution and the waste problem, as well as the marginalization in the country. Striving to solve the environmental problems and moving forward to an equal society would create a much stronger Thailand.
